Wood Wicks

When it comes to candles, there's no denying that cotton wicks are the most commonly used. However, wooden wicks are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative. Here at WoodPitt Candles, we're big fans of wooden wicks, which is why we use them in all of our candles. Here are a few reasons why we believe wooden wicks are superior to cotton wicks:

  1. Enhanced ambiance - Wooden wicks make a crackling sound as they burn, similar to the sound of a bonfire or fireplace. This adds to the ambiance of any room and creates a calming, soothing atmosphere.

  2. Longer lifespan - Wooden wicks burn slower than cotton wicks, meaning that a wooden wick candle will last longer than a cotton wick candle of the same size.

  3. Sustainable - Cotton production can be harmful to the environment, but wooden wicks are harvested using sustainable forestry methods. Additionally, thousands of wicks can be made from a single tree.

  4. Clean and even burn - Cotton wicks are often treated with paraffin, which can release harmful carcinogens into the air. They also tend to burn unevenly, leaving wax stuck on the sides of the jar. Wooden wicks, on the other hand, heat the wax evenly, providing a clean and soot-free burn.

Wood wicks are typically made from thin strips of wood, usually from a variety of hardwoods such as poplar, linden, and basswood. These hardwoods are chosen because they are known for their good burning properties and low smoke production. Some manufacturers may also use other types of wood such as cedar, birch, or even reclaimed wood.

Poplar wood is a common choice for wood wicks because it has a tight grain structure and burns evenly, which leads to a steady flame. Linden wood is also a popular choice because it has a consistent texture and burns well. Basswood is another good option because it has a low resin content, which makes it less likely to produce smoke.

It's worth noting that some manufacturers may also use other types of wood such as cedar, birch, or reclaimed wood. And some of the manufacturers may also offer a blend of different types of wood to achieve a specific burning characteristic.

It's important to keep in mind that different types of wood will have different burning properties, such as different rates of burning, and different burning temperatures. So, it's important to test the wick with the specific candle wax and container before making a large batch.
